Surfing is a way of life in Hawaii, and some of the best surfers in the world grew up surfing the Hawaiian surf breaks. On Oahu, there is a surf spot for every level of surfer. If you’ve never surfed before or are a beginner, we recommend taking a lesson before embarking on the waves by yourself! Below are a few of the most beginner-friendly surf breaks on Oahu.
Canoes
Canoes is a beginner friendly surf spot in Waikiki by the Duke Kahanamoku statue. Usually there will be surf at this spot all year round and is a fairly safe spot for beginners because of it’s smaller waves and sandy bottom. Lessons are easy to find here, but beware this spot can be crowded!
Castles
Located at Malaekahana Bay just north of Laia, Castles is a great surf spot for novice surfers. The protected bay offers great surfing that is usually not very crowded. This is a reef break so beware of the rocky bottom! Malaekahana Bay also offers a quiet campground with bathroom amenities and an outdoor shower.
White Plains
The sandy bottom and manageable sized waves at White Plains make this spot a great place for beginner surfers. This surf spot is located on the west side of the island in Ewa Beach. After your surf, this beach is great for a picnic, gathering, or just lounging on the sandy beach.
